First day of Winter.

Well, I'm so exhausted that all I've got time for is: Welcome to Winter Beatrix, seen here with a colostrum goatee after her first feed.

Details of birth are: born at 7am on Monday 3rd April after a 6 hour labour, height: 52 cm, weight: 8.8 lbs... and some other stuff I can't recall at this time. A few dramas at the end, but most things went well. Just so good to have her here.

Obviously, obviously, more to come. :-)

  2. Thanks mate. It's both. Beatrix is the middle name. Sorry we didn't go with 'Mokosh'. Good guess though. :-)

  4. You know, I'm surprised that no-one thought I'd take a leaf out of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin's book and call my child, 'Apple'. I mean, I'm pleased no-one thought that, but I'm surprised none the less. :-)

  5. Say what you will about Gwyneth Paltrow (and the word 'airhead' would probably feature prominently there) and Chris Martin (and this link would be all you'd need for him, really), but at least give them credit for giving young Apple a sound fallback position through the (second) middle name "Alison".

P.S. Things you learn when googling(TM) - Joaquin Phoenix's parents actually Christened him "Joaquin"; he changed his name to "Leaf" all by himself when he was 6.

  6. Nick Cage called his son 'Kal-lel' and Jason Lee called his son 'Pilot Inspektor'
    either way they're both dudes.

by the way. what is the propper pronounciation for 'Joaquin'?
    ive hered "Whaakiin"
    ive hered the "Jowaiaquiiin"
    ive hered "jwaquin"
    WHAT IS IT?

  7. It's pronounced "Wa-Keen", almost but not quite the same as the second half of this late 80's hip-hop phenomenon.

My respect for Nicolas and Jason - how they must have hated those boring, bourgeois names - has just plummeted. Kudos to Gwyneth and Chris for at least acknowledging on some level that their child might one day want to go to school and not experience a daily re-enactment of the shower scene from Carrie.

That's remarkable! Doing The Age's Trivia Quiz the other day, I discovered that River's birth name was 'River Jude Bottom'! Hmm, Phoenix or Bottom; which to choose, which to choose? And I see that they have a sister called ‘Summer’, so another obvious bout a parental naming madness there. :-)

  9. And 'Mac' is another name I'm surprised no-one mentioned as a possibility. Maybe I'm not as bad as I think?

  10. Without going back and googling again, I do seem to recall that the parents changed their name to "Phoenix" when they became born-again Christians.

To me, "Phoenix" is a perfectly acceptable - if predictable, given the context - surname. It's calling the children "River", "Rainbow", "Summer" and "Pond Scum" that's strange.

  11. It was after they left the Children of God cult that they changed their name to Phoenix. And I'm not 'avin' a go at Phoenix, I think it's a great surname! When I say 'what to choose' I mean it's not much of a choice.

  12. In the book I'm currently reading about the Narnia series, there's an often cited author called 'Colin Manlove'. Hmm, Bottom or Manlove, what to choose, what to choose? :-)

OK, and now I've been googling...

The first few hits I get suggest that they changed their name to "Phoenix" when they joined the cult. Are you telling me that the Internet has failed me?

When I say 'what to choose' I mean it's not much of a choice.

And once again, the Internet fails me by not conveying your tone of voice. That's twice in one thread!

Hmm, Bottom or Manlove, what to choose, what to choose? :-)

And now I'm confused... seems to me that this is a genuinely difficult choice, but you've added a smiley-face there, suggesting irony!
    It's all so complicated. 8^(

You mean there are sources of information on the Internet other than Wikipedia?! My world is falling apart! Life is hard again. Don't send me back to the Library!
