Alpha bets.

I'm running a book. I’d love to hear any predictions for any Alpha variables: date of arrival, weight, height, hair colour, eye colour, etc, but particularly what you think the name might be...

Whoever comes closest will win... um, the respect and admiration of… well, one or two people, maybe three, as well as the Honour of Changing the First Nappy. ('Changing the First Nappy' prize is certainly negotiable but is not redeemable for cold, hard cash).

  1. Surely the question is, will Alpha have Stephes firey Red mane or Kates Black as Night do. im leaning towards stephes, mostly out of deep need for there to be a miniature stephe running around, aaooh (cute sigh)

  2. Thanks for the vote, Dag, but I think you'll find mine's an understated copper, not a fiery red. And do we need to have a chat, as men do, about this "deep need" of yours?

  3. Born on Thursday 30th in the afternoon. Sorry Kate but I think this little lady is going to be huge! Straight to size 00 no 000 for this one. I'm guessing dark hair with a hint of Steve's copper, gorgeous brown eyes and I've really no idea about a name ... Gertrude, Matilda :-D ... nup, no idea.

  4. Oh and I'd keep dagradon away from the kid once she's born ... he seems a bit disturbed!

  5. is it really so bads for a guy to want miniature versions of everyone?
we could have them act out key moments in our lives, but little.

  6. he seems a bit disturbed!

I think he Will be ok around the kid.

    is it really so bads

No, I guess it's not really so bad, although I'm no closer to understanding why? Purely for entertainment, or do you have a larger agenda? And would midget dwarves also get smaller versions of themselves?

  7. I agree with dagradon... you can never have too much of a good thing.

  8. Mini Steve... 10 plus pounder... blue eyes Blood nut! Reckon things will get a push on due day, nothing will happen earlier. And if Steve would like to get used to changing nappies, come over to my place... I give everyone the sh!ts.

  9. Blue eyes & blood nut? I don't think so. I reckon my traits are going to get bulldozed. I'm like a walking recessive gene. She's going to be right-handed as well, I can just tell...

Which'll be fine, which'll be fine. I can love a brown haired, brown eyed, right-hander as much as any... thing. :-)

  10. While at first, the sight of a miniature Hitler or Stalin acting out historical events fascinated me, upon further thought, the benefits of little Steves could be endless to humanity.
You raise a good point Steve, the only way to know for certain would be a series of controlled experiments. and I’m not sure if your wife would be comfortable with that.

  11. I think the name will be Carrie or Natalie, depending on whether the baby is a 'classic' or a 'prequel'.

  12. Ha. Nice one, CK. While she’ll definitely be a classic, she won’t be a ‘classic’. And there’s no chance in hell of her being a ‘prequel’. Actually, the first name does have a Star Wars connection, but one that was discovered only after the name was already on the list, ie, it ain’t Chewbacca!

  13. Ok I was thinking maybe Amelie, but then I wouldn't think that you guys would be so obvious in directly sourcing a name from a movie, even if you did love it and it did inspire a hairstyle. Also there is the fact that you would struggle with giving your child a name that would contstantly be misspelled and mispronounced. So maybe Emily? Have no idea if there is a connection to Star Wars with that one.

  14. ok just encountered something a little scary... there is a baby website which includes a list of Star Wars charachter names - who are the people that name their children after Star Wars? This is sad, but maybe you guys have named the little one after that crazy MST3K program??

  15. Oh man, I didn’t think of Google! How 20th Century am I? That could have given it away. Fortunately I’ve just checked all the 'Star Wars Baby Name' sites, and it’s not listed there. Yes!

While I would never name my child Salacious Crumb, Dud Bolt, Foul Moudama, Wicket W. Warrick or, heaven forbid, C3P0, what would be so bad about using Star Wars as a source anyway? Most people seem to choose names because, “Meh, we just liked it,” so why would something from SW be unreasonable?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Again with the value judgements! MST3K as a source would not be "sad", Park, but it would restrict us to Joel, Mike, Tom, Crow, Gypsy, Clayton, Frank, Pearl, Bobo and Brain Guy...

    Nup. :-)

  17. Oh, and... "Mitchell"! Wakka chikka, wakka chikka.

  18. And that's an in-joke especially for you excellent MST3K fans out there. All... 'a very significant number' of you. Yeah!

  19. Max! Good to have you onboard, and thanks for your post.

While I was happy to go through high school telling everyone that my middle name was Ferris, I’m not sure I’d use it for one of my children. I think it’s one of those names where your reaction is more to the person and what they mean to you, and when you divorce the name from its context, it makes you wonder what you ever liked about it. But that would mean existing in a world with no Ferris Bueller, and that doesn’t bear thinking about.

    Save Ferris.

  20. Torgo! The Master does not approve of that name, JJ.

The guy at torgo.org provides this link if you want to name your child Torgo. Among other things, the name can apparently cause health weaknesses in the liver and bloodstream!

  21. im going with a non-criing but barely sleeping child. A lover of pretty colours and shiny things.

  22. Hey Bangla-dudes! Thanks for your post. If Mick Molloy was going to be the inspiration, there'd have to be some guarantee that we could have a 'Winona' as well. Just wouldn't be right for only one of us to honour their idealised human! Maybe if we were having twins? Mick and Winona? That could work! :-)

Nice, but will the baby not be sleeping because it's too busy working on the dramatisation of key moments in my life? Or some other reason?
